He was involved in a multi-million dollar drug trafficking organization that smuggled large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico to the United States. Petties was known for his violent tactics, including ordering the murders of rival drug dealers and associates who crossed him.

Petties and his organization gained notoriety for their ruthlessness and ability to avoid law enforcement for years. In 2008, Petties was added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He was eventually apprehended in Mexico in 2008 and extradited to the United States to face charges of drug trafficking, murder, and racketeering.
